In addition to checking out library books, all ELA classes have learned about the skill of reading laterally online. This skill helps students evaluate the credibility of information by comparing multiple sources. Coming up this week - Open Library! Students will have the opportunity to turn in the books they’ve already finished reading and pick out some new ones to get them through Spring Break. Remember, all students are REQUIRED to have an independent reading book in PRINT. 📖✨Let’s keep those reading habits strong!
What can you do?
  • Encourage your child to practice lateral reading at home by checking the reliability of information they find online. Ask your child: "Why is lateral reading important? What were some of the stories you researched in library?" 🤔
  • Make sure they have a print book ready for their independent reading time.
  • Set aside some time for family reading sessions to foster a love for books! ❤️

HOMEWORK HELP (MONDAYS - THURSDAYS)

Does your student need homework help?

  • Our 6th graders can attend FREE tutoring sessions in C143 after school for Learning Labs with Ms. Jan.
  • Our 7th and 8th graders can stay after school in the library for Elect to Learn (ETL)
Students can also ride the 4pm activity bus home. (Make sure your student knows their address. Staff can help students get on the correct North or South bus.)

LEARNING LABS: MESSAGE FROM JAN LINK

Attention all 6th Grade parents:
First, congratulations to the 130 students who are now members of the Olympic View 100% Math Fact Club. Each month the same test is given to students who have not mastered their basic math facts. We went from 4 to 44 to 95 to 114 to 130 students mastering them. Students become a member by earning 100% on all four of the Math Basic Fact tests: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Why the concern? The basic math facts are the alphabet of math. Students first learned these facts in first through 4th grade. Knowing these facts fluently allows students to achieve grade level math concepts. Do you know that 40% of all Washington students in grades 3-8 and 10th grade pass the state's math assessment. Not acceptable!

If your child has not mastered them, please focus on this during the month of April. We have just tested for the sixth time and when graded will be returned to the students. We recommend making flash cards for any missed. Students will take the test again at the beginning of May.
Please call Jan Link 425-314-6500 or email at jan@academiclink.us if you have any questions.

Afterschool Clubs
Get involved! Join a club! Check out the CLUBS CALENDAR for more details. (Make sure to check the start date.) More clubs will be added throughout the school year. Keep checking the calendar!

Students participating in an afterschool club can ride the activity bus home (must live in bus boundary). Important--make sure your student knows his/her address. There is a North and a South bus; supervising staff can help students get on the correct bus.

LATINO CULTURAL CLUB: Sorry for the inconvenience, but our Latino Cultural Club is canceled until further notice as Ms. Nogueda is not available due to family emergency.
